The VANDENBERG is being prepared as the next Keys Artificial Reef. The Vandenberg reef project will provide additional marine habitat and relieve recreational pressure off America’s only contiguous coral barrier reef. It should also provide a unique attraction for visitors as well as a venue for environmental educators and students.
The Sinking of the Vandenburg is scheduled for Mid-May!
Stay at Southernmost Hotel and help us support this project. When you make a reservation at Southernmost Hotel Collection between May 10 and December 22, 2009, we will make a contribution to this project.
The Vandenberg was originally commissioned in 1944 as Gen. Harry Taylor to serve as a World War II Army troop transport ship. In 1963 the ship was re-commissioned under its current name and served in the Atlantic Missile Range becoming one of the most technologically advanced platforms in the world during that era.
Artificial Reefs of the Keys is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group in Key West, Florida, working to bring the de-commissioned Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg to our waters to become an artificial reef.
